Welcome to "OWW for Obama". This is a place to the energy of fun to make a difference - not just for Older White Women, but for all of us who are tired of the "identity politics" of media, pollsters and politicians who paint broad strokes to poorly define groups, and then use fear and anger to divide us.
The initial idea for "OWW" came last night as I was sitting with two good friends - both "older white women" - and we started joking about how the media was portraying them. These women talked about how they would like to be a part of the Obama campaign but, being in Illinois, they would probably need to go to battleground states to make a difference.
So here's the dream: an "OWW for Obama" bus going through Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, filled with "Older White Women" reaching out to all people with love and compassion, rising above the politics of fear and greed, to connect with others in a way that only women (of all races) can. While I hesitated to put "white" in here, the fact is that this is what the media, pollsters, and the McCain campaign will do anyway so, in the tradition of Quakers (who embraced the very term "Quakers" thereby negating the derogatory nature for which it was first applied), we'll embrace the "OWW" for now, in the belief that President Obama will take all of us beyond the politics of identity to a higher level of community.
